06.08.2015According to the communique of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), particle collision experiments have been started in the Large Hadron Collider at the peak capacity of 13 teraelectronvolts. In 2004, ORPE Technologiya, the leading enterprise of the holding company RT-Chemcomposite, which is a member of the state corporation ROSTEC, took part in the international project for the development of the Large Hadron Collider. As a result, the researchers of Obninsk Research and Production Enterprise Technologiya have created the carbon fiber-reinforced plastic support structures for the main transition radiation detector called ATLAS.
The scientists and engineers of ORPE Technologiya faced a challenge that required not only having the experience in the development of composite frameworks for the space industry, but finding innovative solutions as well. The very fact that not a single organization in the world could provide the required accuracy in size and stability of the unique structure indicates the extremely high level of technical complexity.
For the work performed, the research and production enterprise Technologiya received the award “For the Ultra-high Quality Production” from the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The experience received by the specialists of the Enterprise during the work on the project, was used later in the development of the unique ultra-light carbon fiber-reinforced plastic solar cell frames for space vehicles.
“It was the ATLAS detector that recorded the Higgs boson in 2012. This is a discovery of historic importance, and we are proud to have contributed to it in a small way. The particle was recorded by the detector, the basic structure of which had been developed and produced by our Research Center”, said the Director General of ORPE Technologiya Oleg Komissar.
